AVIC Automobile, a subsidiary of Chinese aircraft maker Aviation Industry Corp (AVIC), acquired Nexteer, of Saginaw, Michigan, in 2011. Nexteer, which manufactures steering and driveline products, was established in 1906 and was part of General Motors for nearly a century. By the early 21st century, however, Nexteer was faced with great difficulties and was at risk of laying off all of its 2500 employees. Since the acquisition, in partnership with State of Michigan and Saginaw Future, the State’s local economic development partner, Nexteer has added 2000 jobs, many of them engineers, in Saginaw, and has set up a new global headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan. This represents a unique and highly-successful partnership between a major automotive supplier and a state-owned company.
